Desktop Background | April 2015

Happy April Fools Day! No fooling here, it's time for another FREE desktop background from yours truly! It's also no fooling that this image shot on film is of one of my most favorite spots on Lake Michigan. The setting sun creates beautiful colors on the beach. I could just sit here and relax forever.

Desktop Background | March 2015

Well....sorry folks. I know its already March 4th and I completely failed to post a February calendar last month. I've been busy behind the scenes getting ready for some life changes. However, nothing calms me more than the waves of Lake Michigan, so I thought it would be appropriate to calm down and relax with the waves of lake crashing to the shore on a warm sunny evening. These backlit waves are shot on film with Kodak Portra 400 last year. Aah, I can feel my toes in the sand now and the water crashing into my ankles and the spray tickling my legs. Instant relaxation. I don't know about you guys, but the month of March always leaves me itching and hoping for spring more than any other month. I have a "come on already, let's get there" attitude by now. I refuse to acknowledge the snow outside my window. If I ignore it, it doesn't exist, right?

I hope you will look at your desktop screen instead, just like me. Here are three sizes for you again. Enjoy and feel free to share.

Products | Fine Art Book

8x8 Linen Book_StacyHannaPhotography-01.jpg

I'm really excited to share one of my product offerings with you all, my Fine Art Book! This gorgeous, linen-covered album has thick, luster photographic paper. Your images look just like they do in print with no loss in image quality! These books come bound with love and custom designed by me just for you. I like classic and clean designs that showcase your images and tell the story of your portrait session.

The albums have a beautiful linen texture available in 14 different color choices. The pages lay flat allowing for images to lay seamlessly over a two page spread, with no image getting lost in a "gutter".  They even come with their own canvas storage bag for dust free and safe keeping so that you can cherish your images for a long, long time.

You really have to see them in person to see just how beautiful these are. In a world where everything is digital, I love having something tangible in my hands to flip through, and show off to friends and family. It's so much nicer than sitting in front of a computer screen.

Desktop Background | Bonus 2015 New Year's Resolution

Happy New Year! As we say goodbye to 2014 and welcome 2015, most people create a new years resolution for the year. We all strive to become better versions of ourselves regardless of what we resolve to become, do, change, or eliminate . I recently read an article in Click magazine and this mantra written by Fawn Deviney from her article "In Aesthetics" struck a chord with me. I read it and it felt so honest to me. While the article was about photography, I immediately knew it was so much more. It is how I want to strive to become a better version of myself. So, as I enter another bold new year with it's new joys and challenges, I hope to embrace them by being balanced, being mindful, and being simple. I'm taking it on as my new mantra for 2015.

Hopefully, it will inspire you too. So, I've chosen to make it a bonus desktop background for you all as a reminder of who you want to be and how you can improve yourself this new year. Best wishes to you all!. Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to creating and sharing more work in 2015 with all the beauty of years past.

Published | Denim & Grace Magazine Nov. 2014

I'm so excited to announce that I have been published in the latest issue of Denim & Grace magazine. My article "My Year With Film" along with images from my "Rocker Chic" photoshoot have graced the inside spreads of the magazine. It is such an honor not only to see my photography in print, but also to have contributed a piece of writing as well. I hope that you will pick up your coy of Denim & Grace here. A special thank you to the wonderful team of people who worked with me on this shoot including: Stephanie Blue, Kayla Pritchard, Scarlett Riesselman, and Indie Film Lab.

Here are a few snaps of "Rocker Chic" and the article in print:

Desktop Background | December 2014

Tis the season my friends. I won't lie, it's the time of year that I want to go curl up in my yoga pants with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate or chai tea and stay toasty warm indoors. It is much harder to convince myself to get outside during these long winter months, but there is so much pretty out there this time of year if we are just willing to go and wander despite the cold. The colors of the sky can be miraculous this time of year and new fallen snow with it's shimmer is always mesmerizing. I love when it lays heavy upon tree branches. It's another world; a true winter wonderland out there. I hope you lace up your boots and layer on your mittens and go for a winter walk. It will be good for your soul. Just be sure to warm up those tootsies with some hot cocoa when you return home.

Here is a little winter scene. Although you can't see the snow on the ground here, I promise you this golden light was a late winter evening. It feels crisp on your screen already, doesn't it?

Have a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday, Happy New Year and whatever else you celebrate this season. I will be featured articles after the first of the year about my year shooting film, so if you have an interest in film photography, be sure to check back for that.

In the meantime, I am trying something new this month. In addition to the usual wide tablet image, I also have a tall version if you prefer to look at your iPad in vertical format instead of horizontal.  I've been noticing after the iOS7 and beyond upgrades that iPad doesn't favor the horizontal format without a zoomed in effect. It appears to stay true to ratio when oriented vertically. So, I'm giving this a try this month. Please give them both a whirl if you are an iPad user and let me know which format your prefer moving forward. Leave a comment here or on my Facebook page and let me know what you think. Thanks friends! Have a great holiday season!

Desktop Background | November 2014

November usually means most if not all of the leaves have fallen already and the tree are bare, but since fall is my favorite season, I just can't accept the lack of color just yet. So, here is a little  more fall color to carry you through November. I didn't get out as much this fall as I would have liked to photograph fall color and this image is a little bit of trickery. This is actually a Japanese maple (that always has great fall tones) shot in May this year (shhh...you can pretend right?). That works for me. I can do fall all year, how about you?

Rocker Chic

RockerChic-StacyHanna-8.jpg

I've been dying to share these images of Stephanie from our Rocker Chic styled photo shoot. I've been making an effort this year to get more of my work published and it really means holding back work that I'm so excited to show off so that I can shop it around to publications. This session is way overdue, so without further delay, check out the beautiful Stephanie, where she truly earned the title "rocker chic".

I was inspired by Stephanie's own natural look and style as well as incorporating a little persona into her look. She's a radio DJ with a drummer for a husband and I thought it would be fun to play up a rocker persona with her. I knew with her cool tattoos and sassiness, she could turn it on and have fun with the look. With two looks, she even got to represent her favorite band. To see the inspiration board for our session, click here. I knew I wanted a bit of sparkle and a bit of bad-ass.

We were out in the sweltering summer and she despite the heat, she never complained. Her hair and makeup never faltered either thanks to the amazing ladies, Kayla Pritchard and Scarlett Riesselman. I mean could that mohawk braid be any cooler? We put a little rocker style on the city streets this summer, and it was a lot of fun doing in. Parking decks never looked so chic.

This session is all on film using Kodak Portra 400 & Kodak Tri-X 400.

Desktop Background | October 2014

While, I should probably be posting something more authentically fall on here. I thought I'd scratch conventionality in favor of awe-inspiring. Here you have Mather Point on the south rim at Grand Canyon National Park first thing in the morning. The sun rays are piercing through the lifting foggy in the canyon valley and all is quiet and still. Spring and Fall always seem to have the best foggy mornings and for me they offer a bit of serenity. Maybe October will find you outside hiking with nothing but your own thoughts on a foggy morning. I can only wish you this.

This image shot on film using Kodak Ektar 100 (pushed 2 stops).

Sorry no phone sizes this month. I didn't feel this image lend itself well to a vertical crop. You should go outside anyway and forget about your phone (unless you are using it to make your own foggy photos of course!)

Winter Woods

Way back in February of this year, I shot my first all-film session. I had the gorgeous Natalie model for me and we went to Sand Ridge State Park in Illinois where she bravely faced the cold and snow in this winter wonderland of pine trees. I thought the snow was magical and despite that we had numb hands and frozen toes by the time we were done, we also had a collection of images I am deeply proud of.

I shot this entire session on three rolls of Kodak Portra and I just took a deep breath while we were out there and trusted my instincts and my abilities as a photographer that I was metering correctly and that I was creating something beautiful. It was the first time I haven't been able to see what I was capturing and after a few frames, everything fell into a rhythm. I was really able to slow down and interact with Natalie without worrying about the back of my camera. This shoot was just the beginning of my love affair with film. I've been shooting it this entire year with no signs of stopping.

Natalie did her own hair and makeup by the way. This girl is a superstar. If you are curious about the inspiration for the look of the shoot, here is my Pinterest Board.

I was fortunate enough to have this session featured on Belle Lumiere earlier this year.  I plan to starting writing about my experiences with film and how I got started, so be sure to check in soon for these new articles.
